This course is for:
This fire extinguisher training online course is designed for anyone whose employer has provided portable fire extinguishers for employee use in the workplace. This safety training may help prevent serious injury in the workplace and save lives. This online certification course meets the requirements set forth by OSHA for educational programs to familiarize employees with the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with incipient stage fire fighting.
Case Study: On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, a police officer working as a security officer smelled something suspicious coming from the stage area at the historic Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah. As he headed to check on it, he reported hearing popping sounds. When he got closer, he saw one of the curtains going up in flames. He called the fire department and used two fire extinguishers to contain the fire until firefighters arrived. A curtain draped over a ladder that was leaning up against a light powered by a generator caused the fire. Firefighters were able to permanently extinguish the fire. There were no injuries and minimal property damage to the building.
Key Takeaway: This incident is of note because it brings to mind the importance of safely storing items within the workplace in order to minimize the likelihood of fire. The off-duty police officer acted correctly in first contacting the fire department before attempting to extinguish the flames. Following best practices for the safe use of portable fire extinguishers limits hazards and contributes to a safer work environment.
