Canada - Scaffolding
Online Training Certificate Course
OHS Safety Standards
From the highest rated and most trusted online training company - since 2008.
This course is offered in partnership with Hard Hat Training, a 360training™ company.
This scaffold certification course presents an overview of safe work practices when erecting, using, and dismantling scaffolding. It covers important regulatory requirements for scaffolds, as well as hazards associated with working on or near these platforms. Scaffolding training topics include types of scaffolds, fall protection, inspections and maintenance, and the responsibilities of owners, supervisors, and operators.
Construction scaffolding are temporary elevated work platforms that support workers and materials. Erecting and using scaffolding can be dangerous without proper safety training, and most scaffolding accidents occur due to untrained or improperly trained workers.
This course is in partnership with Hard Hat Training. Hard Hat Training and Compliance Training Online™ are divisions of the 360training™.
This course is for:
Anyone who works on or around scaffolding must receive OHS scaffold training. This includes, but is not limited to, using, erecting, and dismantling scaffolding. This online training course meets the requirements set forth by OHS for scaffolding training.
Case Study: A painter died after falling 40 feet from a suspension scaffold. Three workers were abrasive blasting and painting the interior of a 48-foot steel water tank. They were using three separate two-point suspension scaffolds configured in a U-shape. The end scaffolds overlapped the center scaffold, and suspension ropes were located at each end of the center scaffold and the outer ends of the other scaffolds. The victim was standing on the outer end of one platform pulling on the suspension rope to raise that end of the scaffold. The rope broke, causing that end of the platform to drop to a vertical position.
Key Takeaway: The victim was not wearing any fall protection equipment, although it was available and being used by the other worker on the platform. In addition, an investigation after the incident revealed that the nylon hoist rope had been broken some time before the incident, illustrating the importance of inspecting all scaffolding components before each use.

Governing Regulations
There are 14 jurisdictions in Canada - 1 federal, 10 provincial, and 3 territorial. Each jurisdiction has its own health and safety legislation. The Canada Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations are the federal legislation enabled by the Canada Labour Code. Scaffolds are covered in Part 3.10 under Temporary Structures and Excavations.
OHS has also created the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act), which is a document that outlines workers' rights and responsibilities, including the right to stop work that is deemed hazardous or unsafe. OHS also lists the penalties and enforcement techniques to be used if these guidelines are not followed.
To supplement the overarching regulations created by OHS, individual provinces and territories often set their own regulations (in accordance with federal bodies) specific to their needs. Before implementing a scaffolding certification program, ensure that you are familiar with the regulations specific to your province or territory.
The World Health Organization (WHO) establishes a provisional global standard for allowable levels of arsenic in drinking water worldwide. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) establishes the regulations concerning arsenic in food.

Employers are responsible for training new personnel before assigning them to tasks that may expose them to injuries and fatalities from the use of scaffolding. According to OHS Part 3.10, employees working with and around scaffolds must receive initial and refresher safety training.
To ensure compliance with OHS safety training standards, scaffold training must be conducted at least once every three years. Additional retraining is required when the employer has reason to believe an employee lacks the skill or knowledge to safely use, erect, or dismantle a scaffold, as well as when changes in the worksite create new hazards or there are changes in the type of scaffolds or fall protection used. This online certification meets these training requirements.
