Cal/OSHA Confined Space Entry
Online Training Certification Course
Title 8 CCR Section 5157-8
From the highest rated and most trusted online training company - since 2008.
Case Study: In Oakland, California, an employee of an electroplating company was cleaning the interior of a wastewater treatment tank containing toxic acids and cyanide sludge. After some time working, he became fatally overcome by cyanide gas. When a second employee entered the tank to rescue the coworker, he was also overcome by the cyanide gas and died. Several other employees were hospitalized as a result of their involvement in the rescue and cleanup operations.
Criminal charges were filed and a fine of nearly one million dollars was assessed. The employer was cited for a number of safety violations, including failure to do the following: prevent unauthorized entry into a confined space, develop and implement a confined space program, specify acceptable entry conditions, label tanks to indicate their contents, and test for oxygen deficiency.
Key Takeaways: The employer in this case made almost every possible error with regard to work in a permit-required confined space. As a result of this criminal negligence, numerous employees lost their lives or their good health. A confined space program and placing a priority on testing and training could have prevented this tragedy.

Exam
The Cal/OSHA Confined Space Entry course provides foundational safety training about the hazards associated with confined spaces. It aligns with California regulations outlined in Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR), Sections 5157 and 5158. The course covers topics such as key terminology, fatality statistics related to confined spaces, and an overview of Cal/OSHA's Confined Spaces Safety Plan.
This training is essential for employees who may enter or work in confined spaces as defined by Cal/OSHA. Employers are responsible for ensuring that such employees receive proper training to recognize hazards, understand safe work practices, and comply with regulatory requirements. The course is suitable for both construction and general industry workers.
CAL/OSHA does not issue a certification for confined space training. However, learners receive a certificate of completion from the training provider. This certificate does not have a formal expiration date. That said, CAL/OSHA recommends retraining when there are changes in job duties, procedures, or equipment, or when an employee demonstrates an insufficient level of knowledge or unsafe performance. Employers should also consider refresher training as needed based on workplace conditions or regulatory changes.

Employers must provide training at the time of initial assignment to tasks where an employee may encounter a confined space. Whenever a confined space permit changes due to new or changing hazards or a change to procedures for entry, retraining must occur. This online certification meets the initial training requirements. According to Title 8 CCR, retraining must be provided at least annually following the completion of initial training.
