Important MSHA Training Requirement Notice: This course is designed to support topics commonly included in MSHA Part 48 training programs, but does not, by itself, fulfill all MSHA training requirements or result in an official Form 5000-23. Completion includes a certificate of completion. Final training documentation and Form 5000-23 records must be completed by the mine operator, under an approved training plan. A MSHA Part 48 training plan must contain a minimum set of requirements to receive approval. In addition to site-specific information, each operator's plan must include provisions for training new miners, newly hired experienced miners, annual refresher training, new task training, and hazard training. This online training course will guide you through each element of an accepted MSHA training plan. It will provide valuable insight for writing your site-specific MSHA underground training plan.
Underground mine work can be hazardous, even deadly, without proper safety training. MSHA requires mine operators to develop and submit a Part 48 training plan for MSHA approval prior to the start of any mining operations.

Governing Regulations
Section 115 of the Federal Mine and Safety and Health Act of 1997 (Mine Act) requires mine operators to have a health and safety training program for miners. Training regulations are found in CFR 30 Part 48, which applies to coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. MSHA Part 48 is divided into two subparts. Training requirements for underground miners are in Subpart A, and Subpart B requirements focus on surface miners and miners working at the surface of an underground mine.
