This online certification course meets the requirements set forth by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) bloodborne pathogens and needlestick prevention regulations.
Human blood can contain dangerous and potentially fatal germs called bloodborne pathogens. For example, Hepatitis B (HBV), HIV, and many other pathogens can be transmitted through contact with someone else's blood, as well as other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Safety training can prevent accidental exposure.

Bloodborne pathogen training is required for all workers who may be subject to "occupational exposure" to blood or OPIM. OSHA defines occupational exposure as "reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or OPIM that may result from the performance of the employee's duties."
This definition encompasses many professionals who may come into contact with bloodborne pathogens: tattoo artists, healthcare workers, phlebotomists, narcotics enforcement officers, and many others.
Case Study: A study was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH of a national drugstore chain. The study found that pharmacists who administered vaccinations were most likely to obtain a needlestick injury during flu season. Over the course of the 11-year study, a total of 33 needlestick injuries occurred at 31 different pharmacies. In general, the injuries occurred after the vaccination but prior to the disposal of the needle. While the number of needlesticks averaged less than those of a hospital setting, the researchers also believe that the number of injuries were underreported.

Our online courses will take at least 2 hours to complete, including the final exam, unless a different timeframe is specified in the course details. The learner may log on and off as needed. When they log back in, the course will return to where they left off.
Unless otherwise indicated in the course details, learners have 60 days from the date of enrollment to complete the course. During this time, participants can log out and back in to return to where they left off in the course. The only exception is the final exam, which must be completed in a single sitting.

Employers must provide training at the time of initial assignment to tasks where occupational exposure may take place. Annual recertification training must be provided within one year of each worker's previous training. This online training course can be scheduled accordingly.
