This confined space supervisor training course details the various roles, responsibilities, and procedures for confined space operations. This course is for:
Anyone who establishes and manages a confined space program must receive confined space training. This includes, but is not limited to, competent persons, managers, supervisors, and those who control access to confined spaces.
This online training course meets the requirements set forth by Canada OHS Confined Space Competent Person/Supervisor training standard for competent persons, managers, and supervisors, as well as Province and Territory specific regulations.
Case Study:Five workers descended into a compartment of the Apex No. 1, a barge in East Ootsa Lake, west of Prince George in British Columbia, on October 4, 2001. A crew of workers was refurbishing the 23-year-old barge, which had been in storage since 1991. A worker opened three of the barge's hatches and climbed down to look for cracks in the hull integrity. He was gone at least fifteen minutes before anyone noticed that he was missing. The compartment had been sealed for about three years, since a 1998 inspection. It was the only one of nine hull compartments whose hatch had no ventilation holes. Each worker who entered the compartment passed out at the bottom of the ladder. The first worker to descend into the compartment died at the scene. Four other workers who attempted to rescue him also passed out but survived.

Governing Regulations
There are 14 jurisdictions in Canada - 1 federal, 10 provincial, and 3 territorial. Each jurisdiction has its own health and safety legislation. The Canada Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations are the federal legislation enabled by the Canada Labour Code. Confined space programs are covered in OHS Regulation Part 9: Confined Spaces, as well as CSA Z1006-16. OHS has also created the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act), which is a document that outlines workers' rights and responsibilities, including the right to stop work that is deemed hazardous or unsafe. OHS also lists the penalties and enforcement techniques to be used if these guidelines are not followed.
To supplement the overarching regulations created by OHS, individual provinces and territories often set their own regulations (in accordance with federal bodies) specific to their needs. Before implementing confined space supervisor training, ensure that you are familiar with the regulations specific to your province or territory.

Employers are responsible for training new personnel before assigning them to tasks that may expose them to confined space hazards. According to OHS Regulation Part 9: Confined Spaces, employees who control access to confined spaces or manage a confined space program must receive initial and refresher safety training.
