Our online training courses present an overview of the dangers of silica and the controls needed to prevent workers from contracting silica-based illnesses. The focus of our online certification courses is to familiarize workers and employers with best practices to decrease the risk of exposure and mitigate the dangers of silica exposure.
Crystalline silica is a major part of the raw materials used in manufacturing a wide variety of products, from concrete to brick, tile, porcelain, pottery, glass, abrasives, and more. Although silica has many useful properties, silica hazards can be detrimental to workers exposed to this material.
Exposure to silica dust accumulates over time, with each exposure adding to the total presence of silica in the lungs. This can result in silicosis and other related diseases, such as tuberculosis, lung cancer, and chronic bronchitis.
OSHA has developed safety standards for silica in the workplace. General industry and shipyard/maritime silica safety are defined by the standards set forth in 29 CFR 1910. Construction silica safety is detailed in 29 CFR 1926.1153.
